Welcome to the Master’s Programme in European Studies

Are you interested in European Studies? This section provides key information about our Master’s programme, including its background, academic structure, and application process. You will also find insights into Heinrich Heine University and the city of Düsseldorf.

Background: Studying Europe – A Path to Peace in the Middle East

European Studies is an international Master’s programme offered by Heinrich Heine University. It is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of the European Union—how it functions and how it has contributed to creating lasting peace after centuries of conflict.

A distinctive feature of our programme is its focus on connecting Europe and the Middle East. There are two main reasons for this:

  • The Middle East needs more experts in European affairs, as the EU is strengthening its ties with the region through the European Neighbourhood Policy.
  • Understanding Europe’s attempts in fostering peace could yield insights for the Middle East peace process

This one-year Master’s programme is open to all students who meet the entry requirements (see Application and admission).
However, it is particularly designed for graduates from the Middle East who have completed a preparatory year in European Studies at their home universities.
